South Dakota is one of the few states in which all electrical wiring installations must be inspected by a state electrical inspector. Seventeen state inspectors (as of October 2019) cover seventeen different districts, both commercial and residential. South Dakota is another state likely to adopt the NEC-2020 this year based on a three-year code cycle. State inspectors exist for projects under the jurisdiction of the state.
