Notes: North Carolina adopts custom codes that are called the 2018 North Carolina Codes. These custom codes are based off the 2015 edition of the I-Codes.
Electrical installations are inspected by municipal and county electrical inspection departments. All municipal and county electrical inspectors must be certified by the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board. State-owned buildings are inspected by the North Carolina Department of Insurance, Engineering and Building Codes Division

North Carolina Construction Code and Edition Adopted:

  • 2018 North Carolina State Code based on the 2015 International Building Code (IBC), with state amendments)
  • 2018 North Carolina State Code: Residential Code based on the 2015 International Residential Code (IRC), with state amendments.
  • 2018 North Carolina Energy Conservation Code based on the 2015 IECC and 90.1-2013
  • 2017 North Carolina Electrical Code based on the 2017 National Electrical Code, NFPA 70 with North Carolina amendments

Applicability (statewide, local, limited): STATEWIDE

State code must be enforced in local jurisdictions.
